The Village Hostels in Kathmandu
Help Dolpo – A new hostel working to provide an opportunity to at least five students per year from the school in Karang to continue their schooling beyond grade 5.
Shelter 108 – is a youth hostel in Kathmandu for especially gifted children from the Dolpo. Every year they accept 5 graduates from Saldang School. Shelter 108 aims to contribute to the preservation of Tibetan culture. They support projects to build children’s homes, schools and hostels – for the most part in remote areas where Tibetan traditions are still alive. They want the children and adolescents they support to assume responsibility for their Tibetan community.
Other NGOs who are supporting the schools
Fruende Nepal – In 1995 a Tibetan activist, Adelheid Dönges, trekking in the Dolpo, noted there were NO schools there and resolved to help. In 1999 she established a school in Saldang with the support of the villagers and the organisation, Friends of Nepal. Friends of Nepal continues to be the primary support of the school.
Sumchog Kersbergen – Sumchog, Dorje’s sister, is committed to helping children in her native Dolpo with education. Her foundation built an incredible greenhouse for the school In Karang.

Tripod of Koma – In 2014 a group of Swedish trekkers were snowed in at Komas village. They started this non-profit to help the school there. They have become the school’s primary sponsor.

NGOs who are supporting health in the Dolpo
Nomad’s Clinic – Since 1980, the Upaya Zen Clinic ‘has been going on pilgrimage to the Himalayas and Tibetan plateau with clinicians and others bringing medical support into very remote, high altitude regions.’
Global Heath Media Project – Their ‘mission is to improve health care and health outcomes in resource-poor areas by developing videos that “bring to life” basic health care information known to save lives.’
Others who are supporting health in the Dolpo
Victoria Hand Project – designed and developed a low-cost, 3D printed upper-limb prosthesis that they are getting to amputees in need all over the world.
We were looking for an affordable prosthetic arm for a student at the Himalayan Komang Hostel. We discovered (yay Google) that the twin sons of Dr. Shrestha, a founder of the Nepal Orthopaedic Hospital in Kathmandu were engineering students working on an a prosthetic arm at the University of Victoria. The Victoria Hand Project team is phenomenal. And, double yay Google, the prosthetics are currently funded by a Google grant. Please watch our short video, Jigme’s Hand. He was the first recipient of their child size hand. I was honored to be there for the final fitting. His joy is contagious!
LimbCare Nepal – Victoria Hand Project has created international partnerships with healthcare providers to make their upper-limb prosthetics available in developing countries. LimbCare Nepal is their healthcare partner in Kathmandu.
NGOs who are helping solve water and sanitation issues in the Dolpo
CAWST – is a Canadian charity and licensed engineering firm. They provide technical training and consulting, and act as a centre of expertise in water and sanitation for the poor in developing countries. They were founded in 2001.
ENPHO – The Environment and Public Health Organization (ENPHO) is a service oriented, scientific NGO ‘taking initiatives and action in the area of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), environment and public health.’ Its mission is ‘to develop, demonstrate and disseminate (3-D) appropriate technologies to enable societies to become healthy and environment friendly.’
NGOs who are engineering solutions in the Dolpo
Himalaya Currents – was established to support sustainable energy and water projects in remote Himalayan villages. They currently have several projects on going which involve power generation projects using hydro kinetic energy from streams , wind and solar sources.
Guidelines for Earthquake Resistant non-engineered Construction – working to shift from post-disaster reaction to pre-disaster action by sharing of knowledge and experience in the field of seismology and earthquake engineering.
