A Gift as Big as a Mountain – $100

Nepal is a country of mountains – big mountains. In fact, eight of the fourteen 8,000 + metre peaks of the world are in Nepal! Gaining access to many of the villages in the Himalaya is an arduous journey along steep mountain trails. A Gift as Big as Mountain is a meaningful description for our work in the remote Upper Dolpo region of Nepal. Altitude Project’s primary mission is to support education here, on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau, one of the highest inhabited areas on the planet.

The five schools that we are currently working with are at approximately 3,500 – 4,000 metres! Illiteracy rates are very high, 20 years ago there were no schools here. The schools are minimally funded and rely on help from the international community. The schools bring life changing opportunities not just to the children and their families, but to the entire community.

They teach a full curriculum  from April 1 to Oct 31 each year. It is simply too cold to fully operate the schools in winter. All materials and supplies are purchased in Kathmandu in March and transported to the Upper Dolpo for the start of the school year, much of the distance by mule or yak. It is a five day walk from the end of the road to get to these villages.

Basic literacy and numeracy skills are taught to villagers after school. The students, mostly ages 20 to mid 40’s, many of them women, are eager to learn to read and write.

Donations of any amount are most welcome and appreciated! We will be happy to personalize the card for you.
