Beyond the Classroom

Education is at the heart of Altitude Project’s work. But in the remote villages of Upper Dolpo, helping a child succeed in school often means looking beyond the classroom. Good nutrition, clean water, health and safe facilities all play a part in a child’s ability to learn. That is why our work has grown to include practical projects that strengthen not only the schools we support, but the families and communities around them.

We provide greenhouse materials that help families grow fresh vegetables in a region where nutritious food is scarce, and reusable menstrual hygiene kits that give women and girls greater comfort, dignity and freedom—and help girls stay in school.

Over the years, we have also responded where help was urgently needed, providing safe drinking water, teacher training, school infrastructure repairs, and emergency food and medical assistance during COVID-19.

These may seem like very different projects, but they share a common purpose: removing barriers to education and helping the people of Upper Dolpo build healthier, stronger and more resilient communities.
